OPP: The Fulton Road Bridge Eminent-Domain Issue

On Saturday, March 11th of this year, Gloria Ferris of Meet The Bloggers and GloriaFerris.net along with Attorney Roger Bundy of Cleveland Equanimous Philosopher helped a group of their Archwood-Denison neighbors orchestrate a community assembly at the Archwood United Church of Christ. The purpose of the assembly was to publicly address abuses of process in the renovation of the Fulton Road Bridge. The main presenters are Marge Pauls and Denise Donaldson, two of the affected, and quite gifted and articulate, property owners on West 44th Street. The podcast runs for nearly an hour and a half and was captured by another neighbor and concerned citizen, Andrew Hassfurther, who has given permission to use his recording here. You’ll also hear newly minted Cleveland City Councilman Brian Cummins participate in the open discussion and offer help. The emotional affirmations of some of the 63 neighbors assembled here are invaluable when it comes to reminding us of what America is all about.

Other developments and details subsequent to this March 11th meeting appear at the Save Our Land Blog, where a team of five guest bloggers will keep you apprised of updates to the status of the takings and on the furor soon to be surrounding the machinations of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The Fulton Road Bridge Replacement project is currently transitioning from preliminary to final engineering and plan development. During this phase of the project, a number of activities are being performed to ensure that the bridge replacement plans include due consideration of the key factors that give the existing bridge its unique character and deserved landmark status.

The design is being performed under the direction of the Cuyahoga County Engineer’s Office, in coordination with a Fulton Road Technical Advisory Committee, consisting of key individuals representing Cuyahoga County, the City of Cleveland, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Cleveland MetroParks, the Federal Highway Administration, and the project’s design consultants.

In addition to the traditional design tasks associated with the bridge replacement, numerous meetings are planned with key stakeholders and the public and to collect feedback and to solicit comments on potential architectural treatments and aesthetic enhancements for the proposed bridge.
